Jake's Taxis
I'm also the proud owner of five Metrocab taxis. These were originally developed by MCW so they have strong bus connections.
They were developed with a fibreglass body and Ford Transit running gear - although Austin/Rover and British Leyland parts also figure. The fibreglass body was built by Reliant in Tamworth. In 1989 Reliant acquired the Metrocab taxi design from MCW and began building the whole vehicle in Tamworth. Sadly in 1991 Reliant also ceased trading and the Metrocab was bought out by coachbuilder Hooper - known for custom bodies on limousines and Rolls Royces.
Here they really developed the design and it passed through several changes from the Series 1 cabs through to the ultimate Series 3. The Series 2 incorporated a completely new face lifted body. Gone was the Ford Granada front of the earlier cabs. The Series 3 continued with face lifted body but also had a more modern dash as well as a few different electrical systems.
Compared with the FX4 and later Fairway taxis, the Metrocab was a very advanced design. Designed wheelchair accessible from the start it also featured electric windows, electric mirrors, good road holding and ride qualities and good vision from the driving seat.
Later Metrocabs were engine with Toyota engines and these became TTT models. These were built by Kamkorp and production finally ceased in 2006 so there's still a few around in service today. The TTT model is externally similar to the Series 3 apart from the position of the exhaust pipe at the rear end.
